Beyond the wall - students' success in writing competition

Pupils from Chew Valley School have received high plaudits as a result of creative responses – in German – to the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The creative writing competition was organised by the Exultate Singers to coincide with their concert on November 8th and featured music by composers from countries which were formerly behind the iron curtain. Pupils were given the open brief of responding to the title “Beyond the Wall” and many of our Year 10 and 11 students produced a range of artwork, poems and prose pieces. Special congratulations go to Rhiannon Slatcher in Year 11 and Luke Joyner and Ellen Murphy in Year 10, all of whom were shortlisted for a prize from dozens of entries coming from schools all across Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. Their work was put on display in Clifton Cathedral on the evening of the concert and they each received four complimentary tickets, enabling them and their family to attend.

Luke and Ellen were runners up and received a letter of congratulations for their “brave attempt in German” from the adjudicator, journalist Peter Millar.
