Genetic Technology Day for Year 13
Y13 Biology students spent the day at We The Curious in Bristol getting their hands on state of the art lab equipment used in their A Level Gene Technology module.
We started by looking at whether we could taste the bitter compound in brassicas; some can, some can't. We then extracted our DNA and used PCR technology (the same used by forensic scientists) to extract and amplify a copy of the gene.
Next up was setting up a gel electrophoresis tank to analyse which students had which version of the taste gene, the same as you will have seen as 'genetic fingerprinting'.
Finally we ran the electrophoresis and confirmed those of us with the gene that makes cabbage taste bitter.
A really useful day for all students as a hands on experience of work we can only cover in theory in lessons.
