Parent Survey 2014 - the results are in!
Over the course of June we ran our annual parent survey in Insight. This is an essential part of the school’s self-evaluation process as it’s crucial for us to get the perspectives of the parents, carers and families who trust us every day with their children! The results confirmed that the school continues to provide outstanding education for young people.
Our culture of high expectations gained the biggest endorsement from families, with 89% agreeing or strongly agreeing that “staff expect my child to work hard and achieve his or her best.” Not far behind, 87% agreed or strongly agreed that leadership and management of the school was effective, that the school encourages young people to be mature and independent, and that the arrangements for transition were good. Extra-curricular activities, approachability, and fairness all gained approval ratings over 80%, and 83% agreed that “my child likes Chew Valley School.”
The survey also helps the school to identify areas for development. Ensuring we tackle bullying effectively remains a vital priority for us, as does keeping parents up to date. We will be running information evenings for families in the next academic year to address this, and we will also be implementing new procedures for monitoring student behaviour. We are determined that learning should not be disrupted and that all young people should feel safe, secure and happy, and this will remain a focus next year. Whilst three quarters of families agreed that “the school provides appropriate homework,” 10% disagreed and a group of teachers will be working next year to sharpen up our practice in developing independent learning at home.
Finally, it was really helpful to read the comments left by families at the end of the survey. Some took the opportunity to raise specific issues with us, including the timing and booking of appointments at parents’ evenings and the need for more information about grouping and setting arrangements at the school. Senior staff are in the process of responding to each comment personally to address all the issues raised. Most gratifying of all were the many comments thanking staff for their hard work and confirming that Chew Valley really is a wonderful place to come to school:
“Chew Valley is an excellent school. The teaching staff are all caring and supportive. There appears to be an element of fun to learning and the relationship between staff and students is friendly yet professional, especially in the 6th Form. All the students that I have been in contact with in the 6th Form are mature and sociable and a credit to the school. They are fully equipped to move into higher education both academically and socially. Well done!”
“My children have been very happy…at Chew Valley School.”
“Maths department exceptional - much appreciated.”
“We are very grateful for the pastoral care they receive from their tutors…thank you all very much.”
“Just want to say how very happy we are with Chew Valley…this is down to fantastic teaching and a great environment for learning. Thanks to all the great staff and teachers who together make Chew Valley an amazing school.”
“My children have flourished and felt safe and content at Chew Valley. The vast majority of the teaching staff are so dedicated and encouraging to the pupils, for which we are very grateful. I'm pretty smug in the knowledge that many of my friends pay huge amounts of money for their kids to go private, and mine are doing just as well at Chew Valley!! Thank you.”
