Ten Tors 2017
Students from Chew Valley School have been training for the annual Ten Tors Event on Dartmoor since September. Over the months they have improved their navigation skills, their knowledge of expedition skills and their fitness to be ready for the event from the 5 to 7 May.
This year Chew Valley were lucky enough to gain a second 35 mile team, and so far for the first time, had four teams in the challenge, two 35 mile teams, a 45 mile and 55 mile team. In addition working with the Axe Valley and Gordano District Scouts, a number of students also took part in the challenge.
The weather was kind to the walkers during the challenge and the participants showed real determination and resilience to complete their distances. Ten Tors is not a race and the challenge is completed when the team of 6 cross the finish line on Sunday.
Dartmoor was benevolent this year, although walking these distances is never easy, it did allow the students to make the most of the conditions and finish in really good times on Sunday morning, impressing even some of the local teams from around the edge of Dartmoor.
Every student who participated in the training or the challenge itself, with the school or the Scouts, should be really proud of their achievements over the Ten Tors season this year. 2017 will certainly be remembered as a vintage year.
