Why do some people HATE sprouts?

On Tuesday the Year 13 Biology group visited the labs at @Bristol to try to find a genetic explanation for this Christmas conundrum. To start with…the taste test, PCT is the ‘active ingredient’ in sprouts (and all brassicas) that for some people, tastes utterly bitter, for some it’s mildly bitter, and some don’t taste it at all.  The basis for this ability to taste is genetic so we spent the rest of the day using University-grade equipment to extract, isolate and amplify the gene and finally to visualise it on the format that you will all be familiar with from CSI, Jeremy Kyle and Silent Witness as a ‘genetic fingerprint’.
